Kiki & Jiji - Kiki's Delivery Service, Studio Ghibli, 1989, Production Cel

A rare and original production cel of Kiki and Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), created at Studio Ghibli. Kiki is caught in one of the softest moments of the opening sequence, leaning into Jiji with her eyes closed and cheeks flushed while the radio plays “Rouge no Dengon” and the film is still quietly promising that everything ahead will be simple and exciting.

The style is pure Katsuya Kondo: soft lines, open shapes, and the slightly oversized ribbon that went on to define what most people think of as the “Ghibli look”. The wide sky behind is drawn from another Ghibli moment and gestures toward the studio’s habit of grounding fantasy in real places and real air.

The original background for this cut is not present. Instead, the cel is paired with a custom archival giclée background, composed to echo the feeling of Kiki’s early flight sequence, shifted into daylight rather than night. Broad clouds, open air, and a sense that her whole new life is waiting just beyond the frame. The pairing keeps the production cel fully honest while giving the scene the presence and emotional clarity it deserves on the wall.
